Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad bike program helps park go green
Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad |
"Hey, the roads don't go where the nature is -- but I can if I bike there," said Peters who had just bicycled about 10 miles Friday morning on the Towpath Trail from Peninsula to Independence.
He returned in the afternoon by loading his bike on a baggage car and hopping a passenger train on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.
Peters and other the bicyclists represent what park officials say is a renewed environmental hope-- that auto-dependent Americans can help make their national parks more climate-friendly.
That's right -- the national parks are going green.
"Sounds logical, doesn't it?" said Mary Pat Doorley, a spokeswoman for the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. "This is part of an overall effort to have visitors to national parks -- including the Cuyahoga Valley National Park -- think about using alternative transportation when they can."
Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad officials are projecting ridership to triple this year for its "Bike Aboard" program, a $2 fare for bicyclists.
Railroad officials started the "Bike Aboard" program last summer, which allows cyclists to bike the Towpath Trail in one direction and ride the train in the other for $2. The fare is a drastic reduction from the usual $15 boarding fee ($10 for kids) for traveling anywhere along the length the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
It has tripled bike-and-train use this summer.
The National Park Service began funding alternative transportation programs in 1998, but is increasing its emphasis as public awareness increases about the connection between the burning of fossil fuels and global warming.
The Park Service is now expected to spend $78 million a year through 2020 to develop ways to reduce automobile traffic in the nation's parks.
In other parks around the country, that emphasis has meant adding natural-gas fired buses or other mass-transit vehicles to bring visitors in and out of areas like Zion National Park in Utah or Acadia National Park in Maine.
But Cuyahoga Valley National Park -- which covers 33,000 acres from Akron to Cleveland -- is trying to better take advantage of the railroad and Towpath that literally run right down its middle.
Overall, ridership on the Scenic Railroad is up 20 percent this year from 2007, when more than 150,000 people rode the train either on daily excursions or on special events, said Railroad President Steven Wait. Wait said the railroad also added a more flexible schedule this summer at the advice of an expert the park hired last summer as part of a grant program with The Ford Foundation. Researchers work on improving and promoting alternative ways of getting around the national park.
"If you think about it, the national parks are a perfect place to start changing the public mind-set about driving and pollution because they're iconic," said Robin Clancy of Brecksville, a University of Akron graduate student, who is one of two hires this summer.
"Not only that, but the parks directly feel the effects of auto pollution as well."
But what seems like a logical course is actually a significant turnaround.
National Parks officials say that since the 1920's, they've built their transportation systems "primarily for the private auto."
Today, nearly 300 million people visit America's national parks each year. More than 4.4 million people visited Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona alone in 2007.
That iconic site also had what most regard as the worst example of a car-crazy public descending on nature: On Memorial Day 2002, a line of cars more than a mile and half long waited to enter the park.
There are now more than 8,055 miles of roads and parkways in the National Park Service's 400 American parks, according to federal records.
But federal officials said there are also now 110 visitor transit systems in 98 parks that vary in size, ranging from single vehicle and bus fleets to water transit -- 12 of those exclude cars entirely.
Cuyahoga Valley National Park -- ranked in the top 10 nationwide with nearly 2.5 million visitors a year -- will never be completely car-free, of course, Doorley said.
"But look around, there are hundreds of people who see that there are other ways to get around this park, too," said train passenger Craig Alderman, who came to the park with his wife and two children. "Biking and taking mass transit are probably just healthier and that's good for the nation as a whole."

My XM Satellite Radio Experience
My set-up is custom made for me, 99% of listening is done in my home, so that is where I made it just for me.
I have a Roady 2 (my 3rd, more about that later), and that is hooked up to Advent wireless headphones.
I listen mostly in the morning while working on my eBay orders for the day, start off with the news, and switch to the 60's on (channel) 6 with Phlash Phelps until noon. From noon till 3 eastern it's Ron and Fez, a talk show that I have listened to since the late 80's when they were on when I lived in the Tampa Bay area on 95 WYNF. They moved around a lot and am glad to be able to hear them again even though I am in NE Ohio, that is where the satellite comes in great.
Why pay for music when it is free on the radio? Several things, no commercials, and while driving on a trip the signal doesn't fade out so I can listen to my favorites without having to search every 2 hours and only hoping to fun something I like.
And now for the Roady 2 receiver problems, this is my 3rd unit, and it is shot too, I have the power plug precariously propped up so it works, just look at it wrong and it shuts off, good thing I have a remote control, so I can't use it in the car anymore, so I need to replace it.
They just aren't made to be plugged in and unplugged on a daily basis, from the house, to the car and back. There are 3 plugs, power, output to the radio, or amp, and the antenna plug.
My 1st unit bought the farm the 2nd day I had it, I dropped it and the power plug snapped off inside the unit, my fault.
I bought the next 2 units on eBay for like $5 each, the 2nd one broke after 3 months, the power connection again the problem, so I bought the 3rd that I have now, same problem, but I can still make it work.
I think the next one will be a unit that has a 'docking station' that will not have to be plugged in and unplugged on a daily basis, less likely for the plugs to break.
Also, they have some with an mp3 player, that would be good to record 'Coast to Coast', the program that I like that is on from 1 - 5 am eastern so it would record that while I sleep to listen later.
Overall, I like the sound and it has made things nicer for me, just the Roady 2 is not a good unit, they don't sell it anymore, eBay is a good place to get them cheap, but I will be on the lookout for a better unit. Will update later.

Changing a Faucet, how much?
I went to H.D. (not Harley Davidson) and bought an identical faucet, for $30.
Well, I am at the point of my life where laying on a floor and trying to contort to reach things under sinks in not a plesent thought anymore. So after trying it (not very hard) I thought that since there were about 4 or 5 more tasks I could have done around the house, I would call a plumber.
I found a company that looked like (on the web) as a sort of franchised outfit, named after the man on the hunderd dollar bill.
They said (on the website) that they were no nonsense, and fairly priced, so I had them come out. They said it was $59 just to come out, and I guess that is fair as they need to cover expences.
So never mind all the other tasks I thought could be done, how much do you think they said it would cost to just install my $30 bathroom sink faucet?
$701.00
Maybe since I live in the 1960's I had thought it would have been around $100 or so, I mean the car mechanic gets $75 and hour and how long could it take a guy to install a faucet?
I was stunned. I was holding the estimate and was speechless. Was I that far out of the loop to not know that this was what they charged. I asked "is this right?" He said it is standard and competitive. I mentioned someting to the fact that this is Ohio, not New York City, and mumbled something else, that I can't recall about how the economy is bad and how can they do business like that, etc.
I said I just do not have that much money and said to just give me the $59 bill you get for just showing up, geeze, I will just contort, and do it myself, and if the people in Cuba can get 60 year old cars to run, I should be able to change my own faucet.

1992 Geo Metro LSI Convertible - My New Toy
With gas going up the way it is, and not actually getting another scooter, to me, this is a middle ground, not a scooter, not quite a car, it is a car-scooter.
At 16 years of age, this little car is in very good shape, no rust at all, and just getting broken in at 133,850 miles.
I always wanted a convertible, and loved my scooter, so this is pretty cool.
I got it on eBay, and just a few days before the bidding was over, there were many articles in newspapers and magazines, about how the old Geo Metro's were making a 'comeback' due to the high gas prices, and how they got as good mileage and the new hybrids, and much less in price. So that made me a little panicky, but I also knew that the convertible's were and are becoming somewhat the collectors items now. So if I keep it in good shape it will only appreciate in value, so I can always get more than I paid for it.
Years ago while delivering pizzas, I had a 86 Chevy Sprint beater car, that has the same engine as the 'Vert' so I was familiar with that. But this car is so much lower to the ground than I thought, we drove around on some back roads and I had to go slow over some hills as I can't see to far over them in case something is in the road.
And I found you better get the momentum up to go up hills, the max gross weight for passengers and cargo is 388 pounds, and I am about 310 so with my wife in the car it is over loaded already, but my scooter was that way too and we had fun on that.
We went about 125 miles and just 2 miles from home the engine started to overheat. After letting it cool down I made a dash for home and the next morning found that after I added water it ran out just as fast as I put it in. Hope it is just a bad hose, will see.
The overheating problem turned out to be the water pump, and the garage said the timing chain should be changed as well, so that was done.
But while out on our drive I found the left front wheel had a bad 'thumping' sound, so that involves a new 'rack' that is the various rods and elbows that involve the steering, no new ones were to be found, so a rebuilt one is on the way, $700.
The horn is about $40 for a short that was found in the wiring harness.
The a/c was converted over to R-134 approx. $200
And although the tires looked like they could go another year, I sprung for those.
So tomorrow they say it should be done, and will post the actual costs.
June 7, 2008 Got the car back from the shop, here are the totals:
$239 Water pump, timing belt, radiator
$503 Rack & Pinion + Tie Rods
$168 Tires
$479 Labor
So with various belts, fluids, fees taxes and the horn fixed, etc it was $1,668.13 Drives like a brand new car, and looks 98% like a new car, so I am happy.
July 3, 2008
Alternator was screeching on startup, and when starting out with the lights on, so tightened belt, 5 days later, again, 5 days later again, and the last time the belt was stretched to the point that it could not be tightened again. So it was determined that the bearing was going bad in the alternator, so a new one was installed, with labor and tax $225.92
July 5, 2008
Just a few days after the alternator was replaced, right? Well, while about 40 miles from home on a relaxing Saturday drive I start loosing power, the tach goes to 0 when I put on the brake, but the motor is still running. I pull off to see if the (new) belt is still there, it is, but when I go to drive away it is stuck in park, not enough battery power to do that, seems the brake lights took power away from the sensor for the thingy that knows to release the shifter. So I had to have vert towed back to the garage, I have AAA at least I was glad for something, we will see what the garage has to say come Monday morning.
July 8, 2008
The 'new' alternator was bad, so they replaced it, crossing my fingers, again...

Spring Day
Spring is in the air, took the video camera out for a little walk around the backyard.
The ground was pretty wet, like a sponge, I 1st went out to try to sneek up on a chipmunk that was sunning itself on a branch of the rose bush, and was sorta napping too, its eyes were closing and its head was nodding a little. But it ran off when I got to close.

April Fools Day Beaver 2008
A few hours later, I am in the office and she starts yelling that there is a beaver in the lake for me to come look. Naturally I thought since it was still April Fools Day that she was trying to get me. So I say, "yea, yea, sure, I wil be right there" and I just stayed in the office. She said "there really is one out there, get out here!"
In all the 6 years of living on the lake, I have not seen a beaver. Turns out there was, and a pretty good sized one at that with a great big 'ol flat tail, it was in the water near shore where clams were put in years ago as part of the lake restoration. The beaver was chowing down on the clams. So the joke was on me after all.
I ran outside with the video camera, but it was already swimming towards the 'lagoon' as we call it, so I missed the beaver eating the clams. We will keep an eye out for it again.

Lunar Eclipse over Newbury, Ohio Feb 20, 2008
It was 11 pm and 3 degrees outside.
They said on the news this was the same eclipse that Columbus viewed while his crew was starving in Jamaca. He told the natives that he would make the moon disappear, and that the only way to get it back would be to provide food for them. They did not know he had a farmers almanac with the eclipse dates.
net10 Nokia 1600 My Prepaid Cell Phone
I had a cell phone years ago, I still have it in the garage. It was a SONY that at the time cost $100, but now is literally worthless. Unless the house is attacked by aliens, and I'm trapped in the house and can use it to call 911 for help.
About 6 months ago, I had been wanting to get a cell phone again, but was really shopping around to find the best deal, but I did not want to sign a 2 year contract. You never know what may happen in the future and getting stuck for a long time, if I for whatever reason wanted to stop, or switch would be a bummer.
I was in Walmart and saw the net10 display, and looked everything over, took a brochure, went home and looked it up on Google. I seem to take months to make up my mind and research everything 3 ways to Sunday.
To do research, I looked on scam sites, blogs, comparison sites. So, eventually I decided to go for it. The phone was literally free, as it was $29.97 and included 300 minutes and 60 days airtime, and the 'aircard' for that same time is $30, so the way I saw it, that meant 'free phone.'
This means it is $15.00 an month.
We still have a home phone, as I need it in case the cable for the internet goes down, as I need that for business, and I use SKYPE for long distance, so a cell phone is just for emergencies, or to be in contact when not at home, not something I would ever use to 'chat' or 'gab' on.
I have used it to do my 'radio show' when I am away from home, that works out good too.
The airtime rolls over too, so now, six months later, I have a little over 1000 minutes left.
The way I figure now, when I get some crazy amount of minutes on it, and no plans to talk that much, I will just sell it on eBay, as lets say I have 2000 minutes on it, that would be worth $200 retail just for the airtime.
I do see others doing this, and a phone with 1000 minutes sometime may go for $50 - $60 or more.
So if I want to upgrade, although this phone works great, I could just sell it, and use the money to replace it, another free phone!
New Update: I get my aircards on eBay for around $12.50 (a month) so the yearly cost is $150.00
