My Blog about the various things I like and some of the things I discover from time to time.

2nd week at Western Sizzlin

This is the picture of the cow for the steakhouse logo. My 1st week has gone by, and it seems to get busier every day.

The cow above didn't make it, ha ha. They cut their own meat there, and Norman the butcher is a very unusual person to say the least.
I am schedualed for 4 nights a week, from 5 to close, at 11pm, and Sunday 10 to 4 and that is the busiest day, line around the building.
The french fryers need to be filtered every night, and weight a ton and are like 350 degrees so you pick it up and pour the grease into an empty fryer through a fitler that looks like a giant coffee filter. Yikes. The new grease comes in a 5 gallon can, it is peanut oil.
Steve the owner stands over us at the end of the night to make sure we mop the floor right, after a week you'd think we knew how already.

New Job 1st Day at Western Sizzlin' Steak House St Petersburg, FL

My friend and I were driving by (I just passed my drivers test) and saw there was a new restaurant opening. I stopped in at the restaurant 3 days earlier before it opened and they said they had all the help they needed. Now it seems someone did not hack it and I am in. It is at 2901 34th Ave N. I am starting out as a fry cook, never heard that title before, but they have broiler cooks and fry cooks. I make more than fries, there are 2 ovens that hold 5 trays of these huge baked potatoes, and they take 55 minutes to cook, so you need to keep watch cause if you run out you get in trouble. The broiler cooks cook the steaks (15 different types) and then we get them, put on the potato and bread, and call the waitress. There are other things to make, onion rings, peppers and onions, mushrooms, etc. Boy is it busy. The main steak is called the number 1. It is a 8 ounce sirloin, and it is $1.39. A side salad is 35 cents, and coffee is 25 cents. On Sunday the steak is only $1.19 and the line goes around the front of the building. There are big steaks, a 16 oz that is $3.50, that is the number 9. Hamburgers too, that is a number 13, with cheese it is a 13 1/2. They are 69 cents for a quarter pound. I have already made a few friends there, the boss is Steve Lanier, and his wife Donna is very nice. I work with Jeff Kaplan and Dennis Rogers. I am saving up for a car, right now I drive my 1968 Kawasaki 80 to work. Jeff has a Bridgestone 200 twin, and Dennis has a Mercury Montigo, he says 'with a 318 it can't be mean. I am starting out at $1.30 an hour, but will soon get $1.65 if things work out so I think I'll make about $40 a week or so. A lot more that when I worked at the Walgreens coffee shop in Central Plaza. Who knows? Maybe some day I will have my own steak house.

Date unknown, but I keep hearing the word 'Eisenhower' Today was a special day for me, after what seems like a lifetime to me, I was what I later found out to be 'born.' Not sure if I will like this, more later, I am going to take a nap. June 23, 1967 Today we moved from Mayville, NY to St Petersburg, FL. Will my 15 year old personality be able to handle this?
